Week 4, discussion prompt option 4: Media and Bias

Week 4, discussion prompt option 4: Media and Bias

The media we consume affects us, but we also affect it. Most people think that they perceive truth objectively, as it is. However, we all see things from a point of view. Furthermore, people tend to seek media that supports their points of view. This can serve to further entrench us in a more narrow way of looking at things while at the same time making us feel more certain that our point of view is objective and neutral. We also learned in Chapter 8 that people have biases (such as the confirmation bias) that make it hard for them to embrace ideas that contradict with their own points of view. This week’s discussion seeks to explore how we can free ourselves from these tendencies.

Prepare: Before addressing this discussion, take a look at the following video about the relationship between media and ideology [Link to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4-XVZ7GQD8] Make sure to read Chapter 8, for example on “Media and Mediated Images” (including all sub-headings).

Critical Thinking on LIVING SMART with Patricia Gras
Garth Jowett PhD. is a professor at the University of Houstons school of Communications. His areas of research and teaching include: the history of communica…

Reflect: Think about the ways in which people consume media that supports their own points of view. Consider what we might do to learn to think more objectively and see things from multiple points of view.

Write: Answer the following questions: In what ways are people manipulated by the media that they consume? Make sure to give specific examples. What types of consequences can follow from people having more choices of what media they can consume? Do we control our media or does it control us? What can people do to break free from media hypnosis and have broader, more objective points of view? In what ways might we strive to overcome confirmation bias? Address anything else that you find relevant and interesting in the chapter and video.

Assignment 3: Nonverbal Communication

Assignment 3: Nonverbal Communication

Imagine that you are forming a small professional group to discuss how the statistics and research of a human services organization can be improved. You would also need to present the group with some tips and tools on positive communication techniques to enhance the success of the group’s communication.

In this assignment, you will create a code of conduct or a set of guidelines regarding how a group should interact during meetings. You will also analyze the issues that might arise when people meet in a group and explain how these issues can be addressed by making preventative efforts.

Tasks:

Create a 2- to 3-page paper by responding to the following points:

  • Describe the way in which you will set up a small professional group. Create a code of conduct or a set of guidelines regarding how the group should interact in both face-to-face communication and technology-mediated meetings.
  • Provide at least 6–10 positive communication techniques that would enable the group to address communication issues, if they occur, during the meeting.
  • Review the group development stages (forming, storming, norming, and performing) and analyze the stage in which your group currently is; describe the specific technique to be used based on the stage in which the group is.

Note: Your paper should rely upon at least 2 sources from additional professional literature; the sources must be cited in APA format. The literature may include relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).

In addition, you will create a 6- to 10-minute video introducing the communication tips or code of conduct that you previously created. Also, include the following points while creating your video:

  • The difference between listening and hearing
  • The five positive ways to align your nonverbal body language with your verbal language
  • The etiquette of technologically mediated meetings (choose any one method to address)

Define, explain, and identify your own power and privilege

Learning Objectives – Chapter 3

  • Define, explain, and identify your own power and privilege.
  • Provide reasoning as to why diversity is important to maintain profitability.
  • Be able to apply strategies to create a multicultural work environment and diversity plans.
  • Be able to create an HR plan with diversity considerations.

Module 3 Overview

On a Tuesday afternoon, as you are getting ready to go to lunch, you receive an e-mail from your human resources (HR) manager about the need to hire a new project manager, and there is a $500 bonus for referring a friend who successfully joins the company. Immediately, you e-mail your friend Daniel, because you know he would be great for the job. Daniel is eventually hired for the position, and a few months later a new e-mail goes out asking for friend recommendations for a new position. You and Daniel both recommend someone, and eventually that person gets hired. Over the next year, hiring notices are not advertised externally as the organization has had good luck with this hiring practice. Seems like a great way to recruit new people, doesn’t it? It can be, but it also can be a detriment to the diversity and multiculturalism of the workplace. How, you might wonder?

While not true across the board, people have a tendency to spend time with people who are like themselves, in race, income level, and other aspects of diversity such as sexual orientation. In fact, according to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and a study published in the American Journal of Sociology, it is much more likely that someone will name a person in their own race as a friend than someone of a different race (Moody, 2001). Likewise, even from a young age, people tend to choose friends who are of the same race. As a result, when you recommend Daniel for a position, it is highly likely that Daniel is similar, from a diversity perspective, to you. Then, when Daniel recommends someone for a job, it is highly likely that he, too, is recommending someone with similar characteristics as you both. This obviously creates a lack of multicultural diversity in the workplace, which can mean lost profits for companies.

Learning Objectives – Chapter 4

  • Discuss the need for forecasting human resource needs and techniques for forecasting.
  • Be able to explain the steps to an effective recruitment strategy.
  • Be able to develop a job analysis and job description.

Module 4 Overview

Over the last two years, the company where Melinda works as HR manager, Dragon Enterprises, has seen plenty of growth. Much of this growth has created a need for a strategic, specific recruiting processes. In the past, Dragon Enterprises recruited simply on the basis of the applications they received, rather than actively searching for the right person for the job. The first thing Melinda did when arriving at the company was to develop a job analysis questionnaire, which she had all employees fill out using the website SurveyMonkey. The goal was to create a job analysis for each position that existed at the company. This happened to be the point where the organization started seeing rapid growth, as a result of increased demand for the types of parts the company sells. Luckily, since Melinda followed the industry closely and worked closely with management, part of her strategic outline planned for the hiring of several new positions, so she was mostly ready for it. Keeping in mind the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) laws and the company’s position on a diverse workforce, Melinda set out to write new job descriptions for the job analysis she had performed. She knew the job analysis should be tied to the job description, and both of these should be tied to the job qualifications. Obviously, to recruit for these positions, she needed to develop a recruitment plan. Over the next year, the organization needed to hire three more floor management positions, three office positions, and fifteen factory floor positions. Next, she needed to determine a time line to recruit candidates and a method by which to accept the applications she would receive. After sharing this time line with her colleague, the chief operating officer, she went to work recruiting. She sent an e-mail to all employees asking them to refer a friend and receive a $500 bonus. Next, part of her strategy was to try to find very specialized talent in management to fill those positions. For this, she thought working with a recruiting company might be the best way to go. She also used her Twitter and Facebook accounts to broadcast the job openings. After a three-week period, Melinda had 54 applications for the management positions, 78 for the office positions, and 110 for the factory floor positions. Pleased with the way recruiting had gone, she started reviewing the résumés to continue with the selection process.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the assigned chapters from the text

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the assigned chapters from the text. It is highly recommended that you review each of the brief Blumenfeld (2012) video clips demonstrating the administration of a mental status examination. These are listed in the recommended resources and may require that you download Quicktime in order to view them. Although not required, these videos show the administration of a mental status exam and may prove helpful in this discussion.

Access the Barnhill (2014) DSM-5 Clinical Cases e-book in the DSM-5 library, and select one of the case studies. The case study you select must be one in which the client could be assessed using one or more of the assessment instruments discussed in this week’s reading.

For this discussion, you will take on the role of a psychology intern at a mental health facility working under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. In this role, you will conduct a psychological evaluation of a client referred to you for a second opinion using valid psychological tests and assessment procedures. The case study you select from the textbook will serve as the information provided to you from the professional who previously evaluated the client (e.g., the psychologist or psychiatrist).

In your initial post, begin with a paragraph briefly summarizing the main information about the case you selected. Evaluate and describe the ethical and professional interpretation of any assessment information presented in the case study. Devise an assessment battery for a psychological evaluation that minimally includes a clinical interview, mental status exam, intellectual assessment, observations of the client, and at least two assessment instruments specific to the diagnostic impressions (e.g., attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism spectrum disorder, etc.). The assessment battery must include at least one approach to assessing your client which is different from the assessments previously administered. The assessment plan must be presented as a list of recommended psychological tests and assessment procedures with a brief sentence explaining the purpose of each test or procedure. Following the list of tests and assessment procedures you recommend for your client, compare the assessment instruments that fall within the same categories (e.g., intellectual or achievement), and debate the pros of cons of the instruments and procedures you selected versus the instruments and procedures reported by the referring professional.

A strategic management plan addresses four different management functions

Purpose of Assignment

A strategic management plan addresses four different management functions: environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and control. Weeks 3, 4 and 5 individual assignments (Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3) are integrated to generate a strategic management plan. The purpose of the Week 3 individual assignment is to evaluate the internal and external environments of a company selected by the student, to analyze the competitive advantage of the selected company, to evaluate a set of suitable strategies, and to examine appropriate metrics.

This assignment provides students an opportunity to research a selected company as if they were involved in a company’s actual strategic management planning process. It allows students to see which management planning process and management plan the selected company is currently using, allowing them to measure the effectiveness of current strategies.

A Strategic Management Plan addresses four different management functions: Environmental Scanning, Strategy Formulation, Strategy Implementation, Evaluation and Control.

Review the following scenario: As a supervisor, you often contribute to your team’s internal blog

Review the following scenario:

As a supervisor, you often contribute to your team’s internal blog. The blog was created over a year ago and is often used instead of meetings or email discussions. The blog has primarily been a way to connect with team members, especially those working remotely, to share important organization-wide and department news so no one would feel uninformed. From the time of its creation, the team’s blog has never had any hard and set rules about posts other than a text limit for responses.

For the past couple of months, you have seen a more negative change in the blog posts that indicate there is conflict among your diverse team members. First, there was a series of negative posts when there was a difference of opinion regarding a global project. People at the U.S. home office accused remote team members of not speaking English well enough to understand the team’s major task. Other blog posts suggested that the company should not hire people who are not fluent in English, stating it is too difficult communicating and working with them. It was clear from the tones of the posts that team members on both sides of the conflict were frustrated, impatient, and even irritated. The non-native English speakers were also starting to show less motivation to contribute to the team’s work.

In another situation, when the promotion of a younger staff member was announced on the blog, there were posts from more seasoned employees in opposition stating this newly promoted staff member came to work at inconsistent times, which they considered willful tardiness. Younger employees immediately wrote posts stating and supporting the statement that you really “can’t teach old dogs new tricks.”

Not only are you aware of these negative posts, so is your boss. So, you know you must respond.

Review this week’s academic resources and research regarding the best practices for resolving conflict on diverse teams. Then, compose two separate blog posts regarding the negative posts. The first post must address the negative blog posts from each situation. The second post should include new changes, rules, and/or recommendations regarding the use of the internal team blog. Be sure to include tips for your employees to help embrace change and remain motivated, or increase motivation if it has been affected.

Length of blog posts: 1-2 pages for each blog post, not including title and reference pages. Support your blog posts with at least three scholarly sources.

Your blog posts should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your submission should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate.
